Biden’s Easter message calls vaccination a ‘moral obligation’

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden released an Easter video on Sunday in which the president insisted that Americans be vaccinated against COVID-19, calling it a “moral obligation”.

The Easter video, released on the president’s official Twitter account, makes reference to God, Pope Francis and the New Testament, but does not mention Jesus.

“We share the feelings of Pope Francis, who said that being vaccinated is a moral obligation, which can save your life and the lives of others,” said the president. “By being vaccinated and encouraging your congregations and communities to get vaccinated, not only can we beat this virus, but we can also speed up the day when we can celebrate the holidays together.”

The president emphasized that “the virus has not disappeared” and noted that many continue to experience difficulties as a result of the pandemic.

“As we celebrate this most holy day, we know that many are still without the family comforts of the season,” he said. “The virus is not over, and many of us still feel the longing and loneliness of the distance. For a second year, most will be away from their families, friends, the crowded congregations that fill us with joy.”

But Bidens expressed optimism that Easter offers hope for better times.

“And yet, as the Gospel of John reminds us, the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it,” said the president.

Ms. Biden said: “Holy Week traditions take us on a journey from sadness to salvation, reminding us that with faith, hope and love anything is possible.”
