President Biden will hold his first formal news conference on the afternoon of Thursday, March 25, announced press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday.
At 55 days of the new presidency, many began to wonder why Biden hadn’t yet given a solo press conference – separating him from more than a dozen of his more recent predecessors. The seven-week period is the longest period that a new president has gone without meeting with the media in the past 100 years.
The White House noted that Biden answered brief questions in informal settings.
“The president answers questions several times a week,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters last week. “What an opportunity for people covering the White House to ask him about any news that is happening on any given day.”
She said the president has focused his energies on approving the American Rescue Plan and distributing vaccines.
Former President Trump waited 27 days in his presidency to give a press conference, former President Obama waited just 20 days before doing one, and former President George W. Bush waited 33 days before answering press questions on a formal environment.
BIDEN HAS NOT YET HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE
The pressure was increasing for Biden to offer direct access to reporters.
