Biden to announce dramatic increase in refugee admissions

President Biden is due to announce on Thursday a dramatic increase in the number of refugee admissions in the United States – the latest significant change in immigration policy in his government.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that Biden will be announcing orders, including “to build a more robust capacity for the United States to accept refugees from around the world”.

Biden promised to increase the number of refugees that the United States brings each year from 15,000 to 125,000. The Associated Press reports that Biden will keep that promise, which would increase the limit to more than eight times the level it is now.

That number would be greater than that of President Barack Obama by 15,000.

The vehicle reports that the 125,000 figure will be for the budget year beginning in October, and the government must consult with Congress before making the determination.

His Department of Homeland Security has also changed to put a 100-day break on deportations, but this was blocked due to a legal challenge from Texas.
