President Joe Biden is due to make his first comments on foreign policy and national security at the State Department on Thursday.
“Their comments will not be the whole of their foreign policy. They will focus on their first decisions and actions,” Jaiden Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, told a news conference on Thursday.
Biden’s first priorities will focus on establishing “a position of strength” for the United States, including revitalizing global alliances, said Sullivan.
The president’s comments follow a speech to State Department officials.
“Later today, I’m going to go up to the eighth floor and send a clear message to the world. America is back,” Biden told State Department officials. “Diplomacy is back.”
The president is expected to make a series of foreign policy announcements in his comments, followed by executive actions.
Biden will announce the end of US support for offensive operations in Yemen, according to Sullivan. The president is expected to nominate Tim Lenderking as a US envoy to Yemen, NBC News reported.
Biden must also announce its intention to increase the limit on the number of refugees allowed to enter the United States
The State Department visit comes a day after the Biden government extended a nuclear weapons treaty with Russia for another five years.
The president faces growing pressure to impose sanctions on Russia for allegedly poisoning the dissident Alexei Navalny, who was arrested on his return to Moscow from Berlin, Germany.
Biden’s visit also follows the latest coup in Myanmar, which provides an initial test of the president’s promise to work more closely with allies in Asia.
