Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler abandoned her plans to object to the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden, citing the violent invasion of the Capitol by protesters who supported President Donald Trump.
“When I arrived in Washington this morning, I fully intended to oppose the certification of electoral votes,” said the Georgia Republican. “However, the events that occurred today forced me to reconsider and I cannot now in good conscience challenge the certification of these voters.”
Loeffler was one of Trump’s most active allies before Wednesday, promising supporters that she would challenge the poll results at Trump’s request. But when she took the Senate floor after the Capitol police cleared the protesters’ building, she darkly denounced the invasion of a “siege to the corridors of Congress.”
Loeffler, who lost re-election to Democrat Raphael Warnock during the second round of the Georgia Senate, said he felt that there were serious irregularities in the 2020 elections, although election officials across the country have refuted such claims. But she said Wednesday’s events put Americans’ faith in the country’s democracy at risk.
