Biden destroys Trump’s classic architecture mandate for federal buildings

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these viewers can hardly agree on anything.

President Biden revoked the order of ex-President Trump that demanded “Promotion of beautiful federal civic architecture”.

In deference to a bygone era, Trump signed an order telling architects to look at “America’s beloved historic buildings” such as the White House, the US Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Treasury Department and the Lincoln Memorial to be inspired, and to avoid the brutalist architecture that has emerged since 1950.

Trump criticized the latest federal buildings as “indistinct”, “uninspiring” and “just plain ugly”. The order uses the Federal Building of San Francisco as an example, calling it “one of the ugliest structures in the city”.

The order was not strictly carried out, only expressing a preference for classical architecture. The specifications of the Biden order are not entirely clear, but instructs the director of the Office of Management and Budget and any related agencies to “consider taking measures to terminate any orders, rules, regulations, guidelines or policies, or parts of them, implementing or making fulfill presidential actions “that include the architectural order.

Biden’s order could put him at odds with the United States Fine Arts Commission (CFA), an independent federal agency that advises lawmakers “on matters of design and aesthetics”.

BIDEN CANCELS TRUMP-ERA PROHIBITIONS IN SOME IMMIGRANT VIEWS

Justin Shubow, president of the CFA, defended Trump’s call to restore the traditional architecture of federal buildings. “Our federal architecture has been gloomy for decades and was designed in modernist styles that don’t represent what ordinary Americans really want,” he told NPR.

He pointed to a survey by the National Civic Art Society, where he serves as president, which found: “72% of American adults prefer classic and traditional design to federal buildings. There was a vast majority of tradition across all demographic groups, including political affiliation parties . “

Biden, at the same time, reversed other orders from the Trump era on Thursday, including one that threatened to cut funding from “anarchist jurisdictions”, or cities that Trump felt did not support law enforcement, as they were plagued by riots of racial injustice. He also prevented Trump from new visas amid the economic consequences of the coronavirus.
