Biden will announce Sperling’s appointment to the White House on Monday afternoon, during comments on the implementation of the law, according to a senior government official.
Sperling has spent more than a decade at the highest levels of government, serving twice as director of the National Economic Council, and will be tasked with ensuring that all aspects of the general relief law are implemented as planned.
“There is no one who knows how the federal government works better than Gene Sperling, and there is no one better qualified to take charge of implementing the Rescue Plan and ensuring that it serves the American people,” said the senior government official, noting that Sperling spent more than a decade in important government positions. “He has a history of translating complex policies into tangible results for working and middle-class families.”
The official noted Sperling’s experience in helping to implement auto rescue and helping small businesses during the Great Recession.
Sperling’s name was added to the mix as White House officials discussed possible replacements for Neera Tanden after she withdrew her nomination to head the Office of Administration and Budget, according to a source familiar with the matter.
