The Biden government plans to close the controversial detention center in Guantánamo Bay by the end of its term, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.
Speaking at his daily press conference, Psaki said the government had launched a lawsuit with the National Security Council to examine measures to close the facility. She said it is “certainly our objective and our intention” to close the controversial prison, which was a priority for former President Barack Obama that he did not comply with.
Psaki said that several political functions of the sub-cabinet still need to be fulfilled as the government moves forward with the effort. The effort to close the facility would be a “robust inter-agency process,” said Psaki.
