Biden administration officials draw up $ 3 trillion economic plan

WASHINGTON – Government officials are working out a plan for a multi-part infrastructure and economic package that could cost up to $ 3 trillion and fulfill key elements of President Biden’s campaign agenda, according to people involved in the discussions.

The first proposal would focus on roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects and would include many of the climate change initiatives that Biden outlined in the “Build Better” plan that he released during the 2020 campaign.

That package would be followed by measures focused on education and other priorities, including the extension of the newly expanded child tax credit scheduled to expire at the end of the year and the provision of free universal preschool and community college, people said.

The packages may face a difficult path in the divided Congress, and Democrats are not all in agreement on how they should move forward with their spending and tax proposals. Biden is expected to be informed of the details of the proposals this week, and people have warned that the strategy is preliminary. Biden would need to approve the legislative strategy for it to move forward.

Some details of the strategy under consideration were reported earlier by the New York Times.
