Bethesda tweeted about the Elder Scrolls. Yes, friends, we are starting 2021 with a bang: one of the most notable video game studios in the world has recognized one of its most popular video game series. But with the Elder Scrolls 6 release date still years away, hype-hungry fans have a lot to read in this message – and there may be a good reason for that.
The tweet, posted on December 31, says “Transcribe the past and map the future. A happy New Year! ”You can choose to read this as a slightly cryptic New Year’s message, but it comes with the image of a map with images strange enough to suggest that ‘mapping the future’ is an invitation to look for clues about TES6.
The map shows Skyrim, and there are three bright lights sitting on it. One is in a box above the map, one is on Skyrim itself and the third is below the map, in an area marked simply by the word ‘Hammerfell’. Popular speculation among the community (as noted by the Game Informer) is that the light from Skyrim represents the ‘past’, the light from Hammerfell represents the ‘future’ and the third light … well, no one seems to have a solid idea of what is the third one the light represents.
Anyway, the lights suggest that The Elder Scrolls’ future lies in Hammerfell and, in fact, popular speculation suggests that this will be the scenario for TES6. The original E3 2018 teaser trailer showed a rocky landscape that looks a lot like how Hammerfell has traditionally been portrayed in the Elder Scrolls tradition.

Of course, the last time a beloved RPG game developer tweeted randomly about one of his seemingly dormant series, it was BioWare with Mass Effect – and now we have a remastered trilogy on the way and a teaser trailer for Mass Effect 5. Who can say what what will follow for Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls, then?
