Republican Senator Ben Sasse is facing more opposition in his home state of Nebraska for criticizing former President Trump.
Last week, the local Republican Party in the state’s largest conservative county reportedly voted to help other counties in their attempt to censor Sasse, 48, a Nebraska native who has served in the Senate since 2015.
Sarpy County Republicans voted 2-1 on Thursday to join Scotts Bluff and Hitchcock counties to officially condemn Sasse for attacking Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn the election results and for claiming that Trump helped incite the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
Sasse, who was easily re-elected in November, is a vocal critic of the former president and has been censored by his home state before.
Robert Anthony, a resident of Sarpy County, voted for censorship.

“Sasse says he’s just here to defend the constitution, but Sarpy Republicans think people are stepping on the constitution all the time,” said Anthony.

Anthony said he and other Nebraska Republicans believe Sasse opportunistically supported the then president until Sasse won the Senate primaries, so the senator went back to criticizing Trump.
Sarpy County’s censorship proposal focuses on what he called Sasse’s “character attacks”, according to the World-Herald.

Sasse, not being intimidated by the threat, defended himself in a video that was released on Thursday and addressed to members of the Central Committee of the Republican State. The committee will vote on February 13 on whether to censor it.
“You can blame me again,” says Sasse in the video, “but let’s be clear about why this is happening. It’s because I still believe, as you used to do, that politics is not a guy’s weird worship.”
“Let’s be clear: the anger in this state party was never about me violating principles or abandoning conservative politics – I am one of the most conservative voters in the Senate – the anger has always been simply that I didn’t bend my knee to a guy,” emphasized Sasse . “Personality cults are not conservative. Conspiracy theories are not conservative. Lying that an election has been stolen is not conservative.”

Douglas County Republican Party President Christian Mirch told the newspaper that its members have not received a motion of censure and “Instead, the DCRP is focused on moving forward as a unified party, with an eye on our shared conservative values. . “
