The Cuban-born actress stars in the next biopic as the late American screen legend and took nine months to understand the correct tone of the dialogue, leaving her brain ‘fried’.

Asked if she mastered Marilyn’s American accent, she said: ‘I tried! It took me only nine months of dialect and practice training, and a few ADR sessions [rerecording dialogue after filming]. ‘

Monroe was best known for the films Some Like It Hot (1959) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). She lived from 1926 to 1962 and is still considered one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood history.

Ana, 32, could see similarities between the women who were acting now and those on the screen at the height of Marilyn.

She said in an interview for the Sunday Times’ Style ‘magazine:’ I had a lot of thoughts as a woman in the industry, and even in general, about how things from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s are so related to the days of today.

‘And how, if you don’t have a strong base, with your family and so on, it’s very difficult to survive – very difficult.’

The star has had a number of successful roles, but she is convinced that she was just ‘lucky’ to get those roles and it’s all about being in the right situation.

Talking about her illustrious career, she said: ‘I don’t know. I always thought that this thing of being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people, has kind of been my life. I feel that being brave, combined with that, makes me feel lucky.

‘So, every time I have that instinct, that my instinct is telling me to get on a plane, I go with it – because I feel that the result of this will be good!’

Ana admitted that it was her ‘curiosity’ and ‘ambition’ that made her leave Cuba for her acting career.

She shared with the Times: ‘I just felt like I always wanted more in everything in my life. I have been very ambitious and curious and wanted to do more. In Cuba you live in a bubble. I didn’t know what the world was like.

‘I have never traveled before in my life … I think – and I say this in the best possible way – being ignorant about some things can help, because you are not afraid. I just went and did it. If I had to do that now, knowing what it is like and what I have to go through, I would be scared. But I’m glad I did that. I didn’t think twice. ‘
