A beloved deputy from Colleton County, South Carolina, died this weekend after a “short, headstrong battle” with COVID-19 and Pneumonia.
Detective Sgt. Edward Marcurell died on Saturday night at Colleton Medical Center, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday.
Marcurella has worked as a rescuer for over 35 years.
“Their selflessness, integrity and dedication to serve and protect the community were immeasurable,” said officials at the sheriff’s office.
Among many accomplishments, he played an important role in both the Lowcountry Human Trafficking Task Force and the Internet Crimes Against Children. His passion in life was “to bring justice to children without a voice and end the human trafficking epidemic”.
“Detective Sgt Ed Marcurella will be sorely missed. He played a big role in identifying and prosecuting child abusers, ” Hopeful horizons, a children’s advocacy, domestic violence and rape crisis center serving Lowcountry, tweeted.
Marcurella served in the United States armed forces as a firefighter and paramedic.
“The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is not just honored to call the sergeant. Marcurella is a friend, but a family, ”said officials in the sheriff’s office. “While we are crying, we ask the community to keep the sergeant. Marcurella’s family, friends and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers. “
According to the latest SCDHEC statistics, a total of 6,237 South Carolinians with COVID-19 have died since March.
January was a tragic month for South Carolina law enforcement officers. Marcurella was at least the fourth South Carolina law enforcement officer to die this month.
Last week, Horry County Police Officer Melton “Fox” Gore died in a car accident. On January 1, Sgt. Gordon William Best of North Myrtle Beach died in an accident while on his way to a service call on Highway 17. On January 6, Marion County deputy Jonathan Price died after an accident.
