Bellamy returns to Michigan Football Program as Wide Receivers Coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Head football coach at the University of Michigan Jim Harbaugh announced today (Monday, January 25) the hiring of Ron Bellamy as coach of the program’s wide receivers. Bellamy has been one of the most successful high school football coaches in the state of Michigan for the past decade.

“Ron is a high-profile individual, as well as an excellent coach and mentor,” said Harbaugh, the soccer coach for J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family. “He shows a lot of energy and enthusiasm for teaching and developing young people and has created lasting relationships with his players. We are delighted to welcome Ron and his wife, Aamira, and their children into the Michigan Football family.”

Harbaugh also announced that the program has reached an agreement on contract extensions with Jay Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore. Jay Harbaugh will train the tight end and continue to coordinate the units of special teams, while Moore will change and train the offensive line and assume roles as a co-offensive coordinator. Recently hired aluminum Mike Hart will be the mentor of the running backs and the offensive coordinator Josh Gattis will work with wide receivers alongside Bellamy. Head coach Jim Harbaugh will train the team’s defenders. These moves complete the Wolverines’ offensive technical team towards the 2021 season.

Bellamy completed his 11th year as a football coach at West Bloomfield High School, winning the Division 1 state championship with a 41-0 victory over Davison on Saturday (January 23) at Ford Field in Detroit. Bellamy helped the Lakers post a record 11-1 in 2020 and secure their first state title.

He took the Lakers to the heats in each of the past seven years, including a trip to the Division 1 state finals in 2017 and consecutive appearances in the regional finals in 2018 and 2019. Bellamy has compiled a record 76-41 during his 11 seasons in charge of West Bloomfield. Before their arrival, the school qualified for the playoffs on only two occasions.

Bellamy was instrumental in helping his players achieve their goal of playing college football, helping 165 players win scholarships, including 50 at the FBS level.

As a student-athlete in Michigan, Bellamy started 25 of the 36 games he played as a wide receiver during his career. He collected 67 receptions for 888 yards and nine touchdowns during his career, including 46 receptions for 530 yards and five TDs as a senior.

He majored in sports and communications management in Michigan in 2003. After graduating, Bellamy signed with the Miami Dolphins as a non-hired free agent. He was on the Dolphins’ training team in 2003 and 2004 and spent seasons at the Baltimore Ravens (2005) and Detroit Lions (2007-08). Bellamy received a master’s degree in education from Wayne State in 2011.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Bellamy studied at Archbishop Shaw High School. He was a four-year honor roll student who competed in football and athletics, earning praise in every district, every subway, every state and across America in both sports.

Bellamy and his wife, Aamira, have two children.
