When Apple announced the iPhone 12 models with MagSafe charging capabilities, the first third-party “MagSafe” accessories were displayed during the announcement. Shortly thereafter, Belkin officially launched the Boost Charge Pro 3 in 1 wireless charger with MagSafe, which is the first official third-party “MagSafe” charging option.
Belkin’s Boost Charge Pro definidoMagSafe is set to be available for purchase on January 8, and prior to launch, I was testing the charger to see its performance compared to the standalone SaMagSafe charger and whether it is worth the $ 150 requested for the price .
In terms of design, the Boost Charge Pro agMagSafe is similar to other Belkin 3-in-1 chargers on the market. Made of a white plastic material that is coated with a softer silicone, the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe has a circular base with a chrome angled t-shaped arm protruding from the top that houses a MagSafe charger on one side and an Apple Watch carrying the other’s disc.
The design looks simple and straightforward, but I would like the circular base to be slightly smaller or rectangular to fit better on a table. I find the shape a little strange on my small table because it is about 5.3 inches wide at its widest point, but given the weight of the iPhone with the angle of the charger, it probably needs a base this size to hold itself in place. foot. Both loading discs are static and cannot be rotated or angled in any way, and the standard angle takes up more vertical space than I would like.
The MagSafe charger works with all Apple iPhone 12 models and is sized to allow use in portrait or landscape mode. Even the largest iPhone 12 Pro Max can be used in landscape mode without interfering with the Apple Watch charging disc on the other side. The magnets align quickly and it is simple to place a “iPhone” in the proper place to charge, even in the dark.
The same soft material that covers Apple’s standard agMagSafe charger covers Belkin’s MagSafe charger, while the Apple Watch charging disc is a softer plastic like Apple’s charging options for the Apple Watch. You can get the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe in black or white, and there is a stickier silicone material at the bottom of the accessory to ensure that it stays in place on a table when holding a iPhone, in addition to having a heavy base.
You’ll notice that in many of my photos, the Apple Watch is tilted, and that’s because it just doesn’t want to be straight on the Apple Watch’s charging disc. It turns with a little push or when connecting / disconnecting a iPhone 12, but note that I have a 40 mm Apple Watch. With further testing with a 44 mm Apple Watch, I have not seen the same problem. It is also less pronounced with a heavier 40 mm stainless steel Apple Watch, but the problem is present in this model.
The Boost Charge Pro MagSafe is quite light, but with the sticky base I had no problems with it getting up or moving when removing my iPhone from the charger. There is a white LED light at the top of the base that lets you know that the AirPods are aligned and charging correctly. It is amber if the alignment is incorrect or if there is an object in the path. I’m not a fan of charging lights on docks because they distract me at night, but at least that light is limited to charging AirPods.
The PiPhone fits the charger at an angle and is easy to see when you look at it on a nightstand or table while charging, if you get a notification or want to check the time. If you want, you can also use it for FaceTime calls or to watch videos in landscape mode.
As this is a 3 in 1 charger, the Boost Charge Pro ProMagSafe base is a wireless charging platform that can accommodate AirPods or AirPods Pro, so the Apple Watch, PiPhone 12 and AirPods can be charged at the same time. The small circular cutout on the charger indicates where to place the AirPods for charging purposes.
The Boost Charge Pro MagSafe charger can charge a iPhone 12 up to 15W, which is the same charging speed as the standard MagSafe charger, while providing enough power for AirPods and Apple Watch. Apple’s MagSafe Duo itself that pairs a MagSafe charging disc with an Apple Watch charger is limited to 14 W, so the Belkin charger should be a little faster.
Apple’s standard MagSafe charger charged the iPhone 12 (from fully dead) at 61 percent in an hour with a 20 W power adapter, and the Boost Charge Pro charged at 66 percent, so it was somehow even faster than the standard charger. I’m not sure if I wasn’t getting 15 W of charge with the Apple SaMagSafe charger or what, but I was happy with Belkin’s charging speeds. I also tested with three devices at the same time, and suddenly the Boost Charge Pro agMagSafe was able to charge a 61 percent iPhone 12 in an hour while charging an Apple Watch and another iPhone.
Belkin supplies a 40 W power adapter and a 1.5 m cable with the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe, and that eliminates all the guesswork about which power adapter you need to get the fastest speeds. Apple does not include a power adapter with the MagSafe charger or MagSafe Duo. For the MagSafe charger, you must use the official Apple 20W charger or other charger that may or may not be compatible, and for the MagSafe Duo, maximum speed requires a compatible 27 W + charger.
Trying to find out which power adapters I can use with Apple’s charging options has been a hassle, so I appreciate that Belkin has a power adapter ready to use. You cannot use a third party power adapter with this, as it does not work via USB.
The disadvantage of the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe is that the MagSafe charger does not work with older iPhones. Technically, “MagSafe” chargers are compatible with previous iPhones and are capable of charging them at 7.5 W, but Belkin’s vertical design relies on magnets to keep the “iPhone” in place and, as there are no “MagSafe” magnets on older iPhones, there is no viable loading option.
You can charge an older iPhone where AirPods were made, although this charging point was designed specifically for AirPods because it is just a Qi-based wireless charger. This charging point worked with a iPhone X, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max, so I assume it is suitable for most devices. Since this charging point is intended for AirPods it’s limited to 5W, but I thought it worked perfectly for my non-iPhone 12 devices and I liked having the option.
Still on the subject of compatibility, you can use the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe with MagSafe boxes. I tested it with Apple’s “MagSafe” cases and it worked well. I don’t have any non-MagSafe cases to test, but Belkin says it was specifically designed to work with MagSafe certified cases.
Result
If you are looking for a multi-device charger for a iPhone 12, this is the one. It works with any iPhone 12 model, Apple Watch, and AirPods modelo and, for $ 150, is only $ 30 more expensive than the MagSafe Duo.
The MagSafe Duo is the best choice for travel, but for a charger you plan to use at home, the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe is a functional and attractive charger for multiple devices that works as expected. I have no real complaints about the Belkin MagSafe charger and, since it works with three devices, allows vertical operation and comes with a power adapter, I much prefer it to the MagSafe Duo.
