Beaumont Health cancels 1,884 second-dose vaccine consultations due to unexpected low supply

DETROIT – As a result of an unexpected supply shortage, Beaumont Health is canceling 1,884 second-dose appointments scheduled for Thursday, February 18.

According to Beaumont Health, it was notified of the significant reduction in the allocation of the Michigan State Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.

“The healthcare system is working to automatically reschedule all canceled appointments for a week later, at the same time and on the same day of the week, as long as the state provides enough vaccine. Beaumont is also seeking more clarity from the state about these much-needed second doses, ”said a statement from Beaumont Health.

“Although three weeks is the typical time between two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the vaccine remains effective when patients receive the second dose up to six weeks after the first, ”the statement continued.

The healthcare system will not be able to open any further Pfizer vaccine appointments at the Beaumont Service Center until the additional vaccine is received.

According to Beaumont, he is prepared to administer 50,000 doses per week, but this week he will only be able to do 2,200, which is the entire state provided in your recent allocation.

The health system has administered more than 100,000 doses since the vaccine was made available two months ago, he said.

“We are very disappointed to have canceled these commitments. Our teams worked 24 hours a day and throughout the weekend with the state to try to guarantee the second dose of the vaccine we ordered, ”said Carolyn Wilson, Beaumont Health’s chief operating officer. “We remain committed to vaccinating patients as soon as possible as soon as we receive our allocated vaccine doses.”
