Bears file request to interview George Edwards for vacant DC position

Earlier today, the Chicago Bears filed a formal request with the Indianapolis Colts to interview Jonathan Gannon for his position in DC. You can read about this story here.

Moments ago, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas revealed that the Chicago Bears has already applied to interview George Edwards for the same position.

Under new league rules, neither the Dallas Cowboys nor the Indianapolis Colts can block the interview of their respective coaches. Instead, it is now a formality.

If George Edwards’ name sounded familiar, it is because he was also interviewed for the position of head coach of Bears in 2018. He is more than familiar with Ryan Pace and the rest of the administration. Interestingly, he served as DC for the Minnesota Vikings, where he supervised Jonathan Gannon, while the later served as DB’s assistant coach.

Speaking more about Edwards’ career, his journey in the NFL as a coach started with the Dallas Cowboys as a linebacker coach from 1998 to 2001. He also was with the Washington Football Team (2002-03); Cleveland Browns (2004); Miami Dolphins (2005-09 and 2012-13); Buffalo Bills (2010-2011); and Minnesota Vikings (2014-2019) before returning to the Cowboys as a senior defense assistant.

Edwards has a long history as a defensive coordinator. He served as a defensive coordinator on three different teams: Washington, Buffalo and Minnesota. Where he didn’t call up Minnesota play – Mike Zimmer did – he was instrumental in preparing and coordinating one of the league’s best saves between 2014 and 2019.
