Bears Cairo Santos kicker is the reason why Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wears 15

Patrick Mahomes is set to play his second Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. And while Tom Brady’s 12 was a generation number, Mahomes’ 15 shirt is becoming just as iconic.

But why did Mahomes, who wore number five in high school and college, change to 15 when he arrived in the NFL?

This is because of the current Bears kicker, Cairo Santos.

When the Chiefs summoned Mahomes in 2017, Santos was playing for the Chiefs and wearing the number five. Mahomes, as a rookie, found a new number at 15.

Santos fought injuries on the training ground and in the pre-season, but started the regular season. Santos landed on the injured reserve and was released by the Chiefs at the end of September of the 2017 NFL season, and in the first month of Mahomes’ career.

Mahomes would make his first start at the end of the season at Wek 17, already with the jersey 15.

According to the NFL Super Bowl pre-game program, Mahomes received 15 offers after Santos was launched, but elected to take 15.
