Beamer gets the defensive transfer commitment back

South Carolina football wins the first year DB commitment.

David Spaulding just finished his first season on the Georgia Southern football program, with a total of seven tackles, an interception and a touchdown for the Golden Eagles in eight games. The freshman recorded 59 snapshots in total in the year.

Spaulding, a Kevin Harris running back teammate, will still have four years to play in South Carolina, with eligibility restrictions being lifted due to the COVID pandemic in 2020.

The defensive back will add the necessary depth to a secondary room that desperately needs bodies. Gamecocks lost six members of last season’s secondary, as Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu opted for the NFL, while Shilo Sanders, John Dixon, Jammie Robinson and RJ Roderick have or plan to transfer.

Spaulding becomes the fourth transfer from the state of Peach to Gamecocks in this cycle, as Shane Beamer and company secured the commitments of wide receiver Ahmarean Brown of Georgia Tech, as well as defenders Isaiah Norris and Marcellas Dial of JUCO, both from Georgia Militar School.

Spaulding may have the opportunity to compete for a starting position immediately, with the team currently having only three players in the cornerback position: Joey Hunter, O’Donnell Fortune and Cam Smith.

Leaving the Braswell Institute in Hinesville, GA, Spaulding was considered a three-star recruit and the 90th best cornerback in the country. He committed to the Golden Eagles over Cincinnati, and also made offers from Appalachian State, Boston College, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, Marshall and Tulane.
