Beaches closed after 50,000 gallons of sewage leak in the Los Cerritos Canal • Long Beach Post News

Health officials shut down local beaches on Saturday after 50,000 gallons of sewage leaked into the Los Cerritos Canal.

The leak was caused by a malfunction in the Los Angeles County sewage pumping station after it lost power on Saturday, health officials said.

Long Beach city health officer Dr. Anissa Davis ordered the closure of coastal swimming areas in Long Beach while tests are carried out on the water to determine if it is safe. It was unclear how long the closings would last.

All 7 miles of city beaches have been closed.
