The abrupt bankruptcy filing for a Bay Area Fairmont hotel left guests struggling to find accommodations – including a professional sports team.
On Friday, downtown San Jose Fairmont closed after a Chapter 11 deposit. Guests were told they should leave, although Fairmont paid for new rooms at nearby hotels.
The Vegas Golden Knights, in town for a series of two games against the Sharks, had just finished their meal before the game when they were told by the hotel staff that they needed to pack and leave. The team found a new hotel, where they stayed on Friday night.
“I think this is the first time for everyone on our team,” defender Nick Holden told the Associated Press.
In a press release, hotel representative Sam Singer said that Fairmont expects to reopen in 60 to 90 days after finding a new “managing partner”.
“We know that by taking this difficult step, we will return to a more vibrant hotel for the benefit of everyone in San Jose, including the vitality of the city center, nearby businesses and Silicon Valley conventions in a post-COVID- 19, ”said Singer.
The San Jose Fairmont website does not mention closing, but the reservation survey does not show availability. The site also boasts of a recent “$ 10 million lobby transformation”.
The 20-story luxury hotel opened in downtown San Jose in the late 1980s. It has more than 800 guest rooms and suites, as well as a rooftop pool.
