The ‘Krypton’ actress will take on the character played by Ruby Rose in the first season
Bat Woman has a new Kate Kane.
The CW superhero drama cast Wallis Day to take on the role that was set by Ruby Rose in the first season.
As revealed at the end of Sunday’s episode, Kane’s character was revealed to be alive, but unrecognizable due to the injuries she sustained in a plane crash early in the second season. She is shown bandaged and being held hostage. British Birth Day (Krypton, The Royals) will reproduce this “modified version” of Kane going forward.
To be clear, Kane is no longer Batwoman – who is now played by Javicia Leslie, the first black actress to play the character in a live-action drama. Leslie plays Ryan Wilder, who took on the role of superhero in the second season.
Bringing Kane back a long time ago is telegraphed by showrunner Caroline Dries. The move will provide a way for the series to give some resolution to Kane’s character’s fate, as well as help the series avoid the TV bury “bury its gays” – killing gay and lesbian characters – that Dries said he wanted to avoid.
“As a lesbian who has worked as a writer for 15 years, I know the ‘Bury your Gays’ troop well and have no interest in participating in it,” said Dries in June 2020. “That’s why it’s important for me, as a showrunner, to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and the Batwoman makeover. Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I want to do the show. We will never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of the second.
