Rest in peace, Battleborn – we hardly knew you … or played with you. The Gearbox Software hero shooter will go offline forever, making the game impossible to play more than four years after its launch.
The writing has been on the wall for a long time, with the digital currency being withdrawn from sale and the game being withdrawn from digital stores. However, even today, players who were still interested in Battleborn could play normally. This ended, not only with point-to-point multiplayer matches that were impossible to play, but also with the single player campaign.
Battleborn’s fate was sealed almost immediately, as it was released almost at the same time as Blizzard’s Overwatch. The two games are quite similar, with heroes sporting a variety of unique moves and weapons, but it was Blizzard’s game that caught on. The price of Battleborn fell quickly and the Gearbox shifted, well, from gear to other games like Borderlands 3. This was a much more successful project for the studio, launching on everything from Xbox One to Google Stadia and receiving several packages DLC.
Battleborn actually started his life, more or less, as a completely different game. Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was first announced as a version of the Tarantino style in the World War 2 franchise, but was eventually discarded and some of its elements were incorporated into Battleborn.
Despite the long hiatus of the Brothers in Arms franchise, it is not dead. A television series is in development and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the studio is still working on the series just a few days ago. However, he emphasized that he couldn’t share or “make promises”, so it doesn’t seem that the company is really ready to commit to advertising a game.
