THE GAME –Texas hosts a series of non-conferences against South Carolina’s No. 12 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. This will be the first meeting of the regular season between the two historic programs. The Longhorns defeated the Gamecocks twice during the 1975 College World Series, including in the title game. In 2002, Texas once again beat South Carolina in the College World Series final for the program’s fifth national championship.
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORN –The Longhorns produced an 8-2 record in their last 10 games. During that 10-game period, Texas averages nearly eight offensive runs per game, while the pitching team produced an ERA of 2.76 and a batting average of 0.172. Zach Zubia is hitting 0.433 with 12 RBI and 10 races scheduled during the last 10 games. Trey Faltine has 11 RBI and 13 races scheduled with three doubles and two homers in their last 10 games.
THE ACE –Ty Madden was brilliant in his last two games, launching seven shutout innings against BYU on February 26 to win the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, followed by a full game shutout against Houston on March 5. high 14 hitters and allowed only two hits and four total base runners. After the performance against Houston, Madden was once again named the league’s pitcher of the week, as well as the NCBWA and pitcher of the week for Perfect Game National, one of the national players of the week for Collegiate Baseball and one of the four nominees for the Golden Spikes Award Performance of the week.
PRESEASON PICKS –Texas was selected to finish third in the Pre-Season 12 Major Baseball Coaches Poll, in a vote by the league’s top coaches. The Longhorns won a first-place vote and lagged behind the preseason favorite, Texas Tech and TCU. The teams sitting behind Texas in order are Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Kansas State, Baylor and Kansas.
PRESEASON HONORS-A quartet of Longhorns received pre-season recognition by league coaches, with Ty Madden leading the way as the 12 biggest pre-season co-pitchers of the year. Graduation transfer Mike Antico was named New Year’s Pre-Season Newcomer and Tanner Witt tabulated as the pre-season freshman of the year. Outfielder Austin Todd landed next to Madden on the Preseason All-Conference team. Madden also landed on four All-American preseason teams, while LHP Pete Hansen was nominated for a team.
THE TIME-Adding to the expectation for the new baseball season is an exceptional schedule, with 34 home games at UFCU Disch-Falk Field and 18 games in total against the top 25 teams in the preseason. Texas will host a series of non-conferences against South Carolina’s No. 18, March 12-14, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns and Gamecocks will meet for the first time since the 2002 National Championship game in Omaha, Nebraska. In the Big 12 Conference game, Texas hosts Oklahoma, K-State, Texas Tech and West Virginia and travels to Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma State and TCU.
HEAR THEM –In partnership with Learfield IMG College, Texas games will be broadcast on the Austin Radio Network, primarily on 104.9 The Horn and AM 1260. Craig Way handles the primary game-by-game tasks alongside Roger Wallace.
