Barstool Portnoy gives a lifeguard to the historic New York bar while fighting during COVID

A longtime family bar is getting a lifeguard from Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Fund as he struggles during the coronavirus pandemic.

Peter McManus Café, one of the oldest pubs in the city, received a call from Portnoy just hours after asking for help.

During the call, Portnoy told owner Justin McManus that it was an “easy story to tell”.

“I’m glad I got a random FaceTime from a Boston number I didn’t have on my phone,” McManus told Varney & Co. from FOX Business. “It was all very fast.”

The 84-year-old bar, started by McManus’ great-grandfather, spans four generations and is proud of its family line.

“My great-grandfather is Peter McManus, and he started … our family business. It was my grandfather, however, James Senior, who was in World War II and won the two purple hearts. “

Although McManus is not sure how much his company will receive, he hopes that the promised monthly payments will be sufficient to stay afloat for the foreseeable future.

McManus explained that “one of the best things” about this fund compared to a traditional grant is ongoing financial support.

“They said they want to be there with you every month and … move on until this pandemic is over or … until … we are seeing numbers as before, so … I don’t need any extra help.”
