Barbie honors Eleanor Roosevelt on Women’s Day with the new doll

Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was transformed into a Barbie doll as part of the company’s “Inspiring Women” series, which honors women throughout history. She is the only first lady to have a Barbie doll named after her.

“We are delighted to welcome former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on the Barbie Inspiring Women series and to show how her perseverance as an advocate for policies around civil and economic rights has had an impact on the world,” said Lisa McKnight, deputy senior global president and chief of Barbie and Mattel dolls.

Mattel’s newest launch comes at a time when the brand celebrates International Women’s Day, which is March 8. It is a day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Roosevelt served from 1933 to 1945 during the presidency of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She connected with the public through her daily news column and went beyond the traditional role of first lady. She also served as a United Nations diplomat and humanitarian after her days at the White House.

Barbie has come a long way. The first Barbie that had blond hair, blue eyes and wore a swimsuit. Barbie was everything from a secretary to an astronaut and now a first lady.

She was a fierce advocate of peace, racial justice and civil rights; an insightful and experienced political advisor; and a tireless advocate for women’s equality and economic opportunity. She really dedicated her life to making the world a better and more just place, “said Jennifer Herrera, vice president for external relations at the National Museum of Women’s History.

Roosevelt was a champion of policies around civil and economic rights. She was a passionate and persistent advocate, even in the face of resistance.

Roosevelt redefined the role of women in politics and public life, and she won the title of “First Lady of the World” for her dedication to humanitarian efforts.
Barbie launched its first digital series, Barbie You Can Be Anything, featuring female models.
Rosa Parks, the mother of the modern civil rights movement, and Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, were also honored with their own Barbie dolls.

Barbie’s “Women Who Inspire” series includes the poet, author and activist Dr. Maya Angelou, as well as nine others, including Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald, Florence Nightingale, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson and Frida Kahlo.
