Baltimore Ravens welcomes security guard Jayron Kearse on visit

Security officer Jayron Kearse agreed to visit the Baltimore Ravens, according to Wednesday’s transaction sheet, opening up an opportunity for the team to provide experience and flexibility for his secondary.

Kearse, 26, started seven games for Lions this season before Detroit released him earlier this week. The Detroit Free Press reported that Kearse violated team rules when he left the hotel on a recent trip and was late for bed check-in, which influenced Lions’ decision to cut him.

The Ravens (10-5) qualify for the playoffs if they beat Cincinnati Bengals (4-10-1) on Sunday, and Kearse’s presence could strengthen the defense if they extend the season to mid-January. While Chuck Clark and DeShon Elliott started all games safely, Baltimore lacks reliable depth in position.

Jimmy Smith, who has served as a defender and cornerback this season, has missed the last two games due to rib and shoulder injuries. Baltimore also dismissed the safety of newcomer Geno Stone this week and watched the Texans claim it.

A player like Kearse would not only provide a layer of security behind Clark and Elliott, but could also give defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale more options for mixing and matching personnel in high school. In the past, Clark played a role similar to that of a linebacker in times when the Ravens had a # 3 security guard capable of connecting behind him. More talent in the defensive backfield usually unlocks parts of the playbook and helps a team to cover tight end opponents and running backs.

Kearse lost the first three games of this season while serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. After returning to the field, he made a career record of 59 tackles with Lions in 11 games, saved two passes and forced a fumble.

Before signing with Lions in the spring, Kearse played his first four seasons in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings. He appeared in 61 games and made five games in Minnesota, totaling an interception, eight saved passes and 59 tackles.
