A member of the Ravens’ coaching staff since 2008, Craig Ver Steeg was promoted to running back coach, the team announced on Sunday. Ver Steeg replaces former running back coach Matt Weiss, who left to become the coach of defenders at the University of Michigan.
“Craig is a highly regarded member of our team and someone who has served as an integral part of our attack for many years,” said head coach John Harbaugh. “He has extensive experience in training and coordinating offenses, a complete understanding of our schemes and techniques, and has a great relationship with our running backs. Craig is a dedicated coach and teacher who has a proven ability to get the most out of our players. “
See Steeg, 60, is a veteran 38-year-old coach, most recently a 2019-20 Senior Assistant / Running Backs trainer. Baltimore has led the NFL in races for the past two seasons, with Ver Steeg working closely with the running backs.
Prior to joining Ravens in 2008 as a member of Harbaugh’s original Baltimore team, Ver Steeg had 21 years of experience as an assistant coach at a college and also spent a season at the Chicago Bears (1996) as an offensive assistant.
Ver Steeg has extensive experience working with running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers, and he helped the Ravens attack in several areas, including game preparation, game analysis and practice, advanced scouts and player development.
See Steeg initially entered a coaching career at the university level in 1984 at his alma mater, the USC. He went on to hold several university positions, where he coached several players who benefited under his tutelage, including quarterback Alex Smith (Utah) and running back Ray Rice.
