NICHOLS, SC – Ross Bailes took care of his latest damaged model to victory in last Saturday’s Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series event at Lake View Motor Speedway.
Bailes was chasing leader Matthew Nance when Nance curled up in a car with 15 laps left. Balls huddled in the wreckage and his car and Nance’s suffered significant damage.
However, they maintained their vacancies for the restart. But Nance’s car was more injured in the confusion.
“We lasted as long as we could until five in the morning,” said Nance. “I knew that if I stayed underneath and kept trying to make the car turn around, don’t overheat the tires and let Ross go under, we would make him work over the top.
“But I [kept having to] slide the right rear to turn, and when you start to do that, your tire starts to wear out quickly. It gets hot and you start having to slow down to enter the corner entrance. “
Bailes made his decision quickly, but Nance found strong confidence, maintaining the lead until lap 34, when Bailes pulled the trigger and went for the $ 7,000 win.
“I got up on [turns] three and four once and I felt really good, so I thought, ‘well, I’m going to attack even harder next time.’ And for sure, he took it, and it was the movement that won the race, ”said Bailes.
Nance took second place, scoring his first podium in his Xtreme career. Although he achieved the best career result, he was disappointed with the result of his incident while leading.
“It almost cost us the race tonight; we had a very good car even that. We dropped our nose in the air and it really messed up the car’s aerodynamics, ”he said.
Cla Knight, Dustin Mitchell and Stewart Friesen completed the top five.
