I regret every day that the complete Baldur’s Gate 3 the experience hasn’t come out yet, but we’re getting there. Today, developer Larian released the fourth patch for the Divinity: Original Sin 2 sequel /Baldur’s Gate sorta-sequel, that calls his “biggest patch yet”. Outstanding features include the Druid class, data loaded to keep you from critically failing all the time and new corpses to communicate with, if you like that sort of thing.
The druid is definitely the centerpiece here. If you play as one, you gain the ability to turn into a huge mess of animals, including a horrible wolf, a bear, a cat, a crow and a spider. In most games, they would function as mere combat modifiers, but in BG3, new forms mean alternative crossing options, the ability to talk to animals and new mission results. In addition, the first act in the main story of the game basically orbits around a circle of druids, meaning that if you are also a druid, the story will be radically different.
Other resources are smaller, but still impressive. The loaded data prevents you from having a series of hypersort or bad moves when engaging in dialogues or taking actions. It seems useful, given the number of times I reloaded my frustration saves due to absurdly bad moves. That said, if you want pure RNG, you can disable the feature.
The Talk to the Dead skill has also received a major update, adding attractive cinematics and, of course, more corpses. Larian points out that if you get lost because you’re not paying attention to the story and just killing everyone, now you can just talk to your horrible remains. What fun!
There are also many graphic and quality of life improvements, so they should please people who like to look at things and be alive, respectively. The patch is now available on Steam, GOG and Stadia – the last of which you can only use if you know the spell Talk to the Dead in real life.
