BAFTA Awards 2021 nominations revealed

The nominations for 2021 are the first to come after a major overhaul and review of the film award rules and regulations that was triggered after the 2020 #BAFTAsSoWhite controversy.

Nomadland and Rocks lead the group of BAFTA 2021 nominees on the most diverse list of nominations ever seen in the history of the British Academy, and arriving just a year after being involved in the #BaftaSoWhite controversy, generating a 7-month review and review of the voting rules and regulations.

Chloe Zhao’s favorite award season set in the American West and Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama about a group of students from central London received seven nominations each, with The father, Mank, Minari and Promising young woman not far behind, with six. Excavation and The Mauritanian won five.

Among the various highlights of an extremely eclectic list of nominations – which saw a record of 50 different nominated films (against a previous record of 39) – was the category of direction in which four filmmakers were nominated, breaking the previous record (of only one ) and ending an almost male decade-long run.

Elsewhere, the performance categories – a year after being heavily criticized for being entirely white – are the most diverse in the award’s history and also mix established talent with rising stars. While the two-time BAFTA winner and Anthony Hopkins receive their seventh nomination, for The Father, the newcomer Bukky Bakray, the main star of 18 years of Rocks, wins his first (and his first film role). Bakray is among 21 of the 24 names in the performance categories that are receiving their first BAFTA nominations.

This year, the awards will take place on the weekend of April 10, April 11, with two shows broadcast virtually from the Royal Albert Hall in London. The first show celebrating the craft of cinema, the second covering the categories performance, talent and others above the line.
