BAFTA 2021 nominations announced – CNN

More than half of the 24 nominees in the acting categories are from ethnic minorities, including Daniel Kaluuya for “Judas and the Black Messiah” and Bukky Bakray for “Rocks”.

Four women were nominated in the director category, including Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”, shortly after becoming the first woman of Asian descent and the second woman to win the same Golden Globe award this year.

“I feel conflicted because many of my fellow actors who deserve it do not have the same privilege. I think we have sent a very clear message to people of color that you are not welcome here,” said Phoenix.

BAFTA announced in September about 120 “comprehensive changes” to address the lack of diversity in awards, including changes in its members and the voting process. The changes, hailed by President Krishnendu Majumdar as “a turning point” in the academy’s history, came after a seven-month review following last year’s lack of diversity in nominations.

“Nomadland” and “Rocks” received the most nominations this year, with seven each, while “O Pai”, “Mank”, “Minari” and “Promising Young Woman” received six each.

BAFTA winners’ prizes will be announced on Sunday, April 11.
