Avatar Dethrones Endgame After China Relaunch While Raya Hangs At Home

Last week, New York City opened several of its cinemas. On Monday, Los Angeles is opening many of them. On May 1, we were informed that vaccines will be available to all adults in the country. July 4th – even with the recommendation of limited meetings – is about to take on a whole new meaning. The sky could be the limit for Top Gun: Maverick opening that week? We are not going to rush. We still need to do this week after week. And this weekend we try to see if the main figures tell us something new….

Harvest King: Raya and the Last Dragon Long-term

Last week’s numbers for Disney Raya and the Last Dragon seemed to put a red light on the progress that some saw in the previous week with Tom Jerry. It would have been cheaper for any group of two (and some groups of one) to invest in HBO Max to see Tom Jerry at home than paying theater prices, and still surpassed Raya more than 65% when you compare the opening weekends of both films. However, RayaThe company’s numbers in the context of screen counts – for films with similar screen counts released since 2010 – plus the obstacle of limited-capacity cinemas, were not as problematic as some may have been quick to rate them. How are the numbers this week?

With just over half of the country’s theaters on display (most with only 25% capacity), Raya and the Last Dragon raised about $ 5.5 million. This represents a 35% drop from last weekend, with 118 more cinemas added to its screening. Early on, who is tied for the ninth best weekend for any film during the pandemic and tied for the third best second weekend for any film behind Principle September 11th to 13th (US $ 6.7 million), Tom Jerry last weekend ($ 6.6 million), and with an estimated draw with Wonder Woman 1984. Raya may not reach Tom Jerry, being more than $ 7 million out of its current pace. But it’s only about $ 1.2 million outside of where The Croods: A New Age it was after 10 days, during the holiday season, when COVID’s numbers started to increase again.

The Croods sequel had the benefit of several holiday weekends and a lack of new releases. Although it is already available on home video, the film is still the fifth place at the national box office, advancing towards Principledomestic transportation of US $ 57.9 million. Raya may not get there, but there is certainly another number 1 weekend coming sooner Nobody and Godzilla vs. Kong test the theater system. If The Croods: A New Age managed to stay in the top five at the box office for 16 consecutive weeks, Raya and the Last Dragon you’re not going anywhere until at least a week before Memorial Day. The numbers will only get stronger and the trends in the increase in the percentage of vaccinations and the opening of rooms will only help them. Week by week.

We have a new (old) number one: Avatar Recovers the greatest throne of the film of all time Endgame

Hard to believe it was less than two years since we were watching Avengers: Endgame make your way to become the highest grossing film of all time. Remember: a relaunch was necessary for this to happen (and it is still difficult to Star Wars The Force Awakens domestically.) But it only took James Cameron’s two days Avatar to claim your crown. The film was re-released in China this weekend and as of Saturday it grossed $ 12.3 million, putting its global total at $ 2.802 billion. Cameron congratulated the Russians when Endgame took first place in 2019 and it’s easy to see that this can be a back-and-forth that lasts forever as a new Marvel phase begins to happen, not to mention four more Avatar sequels on the way. One thing is for sure is that the title is no longer a source of pride for the studios since Disney bought Fox. Now it’s just competing with itself – and The force awakens it’s theirs too.

About these dates in the history of the box office …

March 12: In 2010, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island raised $ 2.4 million on its 22nd day to cross the $ 100 million line. It was only the third film in the director’s career to pass the milestone after 2004 The aviator and 2006 The dead. In 2013, the wolf of Wall Street it would become the fourth.

March 13th: Just a year ago, three new films were released. It was the last time that a film opened in more than 2,000 cinemas until The New Mutants did about 24 weeks later. See “This time last year” below for more information on this weekend in 2020.

14th March: In 2013, Sam Raimi’s Oz, the great and powerful raised $ 5.1 million this day to cross the $ 100 million mark on its seventh day. Without a doubt the film that inspired Ounce to give this period a chance was that of Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland, which raised $ 18.5 million on the 10th launch day, exceeding $ 200 million.

This time, last year: Forward It was not necessarily able to climb

A year ago it was the last semi-real box office weekend of the pre-pandemic era. Tom Hanks announced it was COVID positive on March 10, the NBA closed and soon cinemas would follow. The weekend was won by Pixar’s Forward for the second consecutive week, but with a 72.9% drop from the opening, earning only $ 10.6 million. The news of that weekend also suffered: Bloodshot ($ 9.17 million), I still believe ($ 9.10 million), and The hunt ($ 5.3 million), which had once been removed from programming indefinitely since the previous September. Bad boys for life it had already crossed the $ 200 million line on March 7. Together with Forward ($ 61.5 million in total), two other films were destined to fall into the $ 60 million category: The invisible man ($ 64.91 million) and The call of nature ($ 62.34 million). Almost all cinemas in the country were closed the following weekend.
