Authorities found human remains inside a 13.8-foot crocodile while searching for a missing fisherman in Queensland, Australia on Sunday, according to a Queensland Police press release.

Investigators captured and killed two crocodiles during the search for the fisherman, Andrew Heard, 69, CNN reported.

Heard was last seen around 3 pm on Thursday, according to officials. He intended to fish on Hinchinbrook Island and was due to return home about an hour after he left, but he never came back.

Police, coast guard officers and Queensland Department of Environment and Science officials have been looking for Heard ever since.

On Saturday, investigators discovered remains believed to be from Heard in the search area, according to Sunday’s statement from the Queensland Police.

Later that day, officials from the Department of Environment and Science captured and sacrificed the 13.8-foot crocodile. They found human remains inside the creature after an autopsy, Queensland police said.

Authorities believe the remains are from Heard, according to the press release.

Authorities also captured and killed a second crocodile on Sunday, CNN reported. The necropsy on the 9.8-foot crocodile had not been completed at the time of writing, but the animal appeared to be involved in the incident.

“At this stage, we can only confirm that we found human remains in the first,” Andrew Cowie, acting inspector for the Queensland Police, said at a news conference on Monday, as reported by CNN. “I believe we have both crocodiles involved.”

Cowie also said that both crocodiles were captured near the area that Heard was thought to be fishing, and authorities also found a damaged boat in the search area, which is also being investigated, according to CNN. “This is a tragic incident,” Cowie said at the conference.

Heard’s disappearance marks the third crocodile attack in Queensland last month, as reported by The Guardian.
