ATF retrieves live grenade sold at thrift store in NC, South Carolina

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WECT / Gray News) – Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recovered a second grenade sold at a Shallotte thrift store last year in neighboring South Carolina’s Horry County.

“Fortunately, the device was recovered intact and caused no injuries. This grenade was the main focus of the recent ATF search, ”the authorities said in a press release.

The grenade was probably one of several bought from a seller at the Fancy Flea Antique Mall near Shallotte in June 2020. ATF officials say World War II grenades were considered inert at the time of sales.

An ATF spokesman said the grenade investigation began after an explosion on December 23 that killed a teenager in Abingdon, Virginia. Investigators said a grenade purchased at the store caused the explosion. Six days later, the ATF issued its first statement asking the public for help in locating the grenades.

ATF officials say that anyone who bought a grenade at the company and would like to evaluate it, or wants additional information, should contact the authorities immediately in the interest of public safety.
