At the doorbell: Purdue 81, Indiana 69 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts about a 81-69 loss to Purdue:

How did this happen: Indiana’s defense offered little resistance during the first 10 minutes at Assembly Hall. The Boilermakers, with the hot perimeter firing force, ran to a 29-17 lead by the 9:27 mark of the first half. An angry Archie Miller, perplexed by his team’s performance, asked for a timeout. Whatever Miller said in the timeout had an impact. The Boilermakers scored just two points in the next 7:08, while Indiana tied two on Race Thompson’s tray. The end of the half, however, was almost a catastrophe for the Hoosiers. After IU stayed within two in 33-31, Purdue hit seven consecutive points to increase the lead to nine. Indiana responded with a 3-point basket from Jerome Hunter and a tray from Armaan Franklin just before time ended at halftime. The Hoosiers went to the locker room losing by just four and feeling lucky after a disastrous start.

Indiana kept things closed during the first seven minutes of the second half and reached one in 50-49 on a Armaan Franklin jumper with 13:12 to play. But the offense broke out as soon as Purdue started catching Trevion Williams on the pole. With the time limit for the media under eight, Williams was up to 10 points in the second half and the Boilermakers led 64-54. But even as Purdue’s attack slowed in the past seven minutes, Indiana’s attack was even more inept. Archie Miller lost time losing 67-56 with 5:22 and his team in the middle of a field goal drought of more than five minutes. The Hoosiers would be no closer than six the rest of the way, as Indiana fell on its eighth straight straight for Purdue. Archie Miller’s record against the Boilermakers is now 0-6 with a 0-4 mark in the Assembly Hall.

Featured Performer: Jackson-Davis finished with 25 points, but played only nine minutes in the first half due to foul problems. The second year had 9 of 16 shots and only 7 of 14 on the free-throw line.

Stands that stand out: Indiana kicked badly from the perimeter and the free throw line. The Hoosiers hit 3 out of 18 in 3s (16.7 percent) and 16 out of 29 on the free-throw line (55.2 percent).
