At The Buzzer: Purdue 67, Indiana 58 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts about a loss of 67-58 in Purdue:

How did this happen: Saturday’s game at West Lafayette was as many expected. Indiana, who entered the game with a streak of four consecutive defeats, continued his unease at the end of the season. And Purdue, while not playing as well as he has in the past few weeks, easily dispatched the Hoosiers. Indiana led 7-0 at the beginning, but once Purdue took the lead 11-9 in a dunk from Zach Edey, the Hoosiers never led the rest of the way. At the break, Purdue’s cushion was comfortable at 29-20. Indiana scored just 0.67 points for possession in the first half. Although Purdue delivered 28 percent of her possessions, Indiana only had six points of sale in the first half.

Indiana stayed within four in the second half at 35-31 on a 3-point Trey Galloway, but it wasn’t long before Purdue regained control. The Hoosiers had a chance to cut it down to two (or one with a 3), but Al Durham’s wild layup attempt failed badly at the 13:20 mark. Purdue responded with a Brandon Newman 3-point basket to extend the lead to seven. Indiana never approached more than five the rest of the way. The defeat, Indiana’s fifth straight game, ends the Hoosiers’ regular season. Indiana has 12-14 overall, 7-12 in the Big Ten game and has now lost nine straight overall to Purdue. Archie Miller, in his fourth season in Bloomington, is 0-7 against the show’s archrival.

Featured artists: Al Durham Jr. led Indiana with 14 points, while Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jerome Hunter won 12 points each. Rob Phinisee added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Stunning statistics: Indiana’s porous 3-point pitches in its previous two games continued on Saturday at Mackey Arena. The Hoosiers hit 5 out of 23 (21.7 percent) in Saturday’s defeat and are now 11 out of 58 in the last three distance games (18.9 percent).
