At least 8 injured after the NY passenger bus leaves the overpass in the Bronx, it is left hanging

The bus passed over the grid to the ground below.

The WABC confirmed that at least seven to eight people, including the bus driver, were injured in the accident. Most of the injuries were minor, although the driver suffered the most serious injuries and is in serious condition.

The New York Fire Department tweeted on Friday night that there were nine injured in total, but in a statement later said that only eight people were treated for injuries.

“FDNY units are at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on University Ave and the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx, where a double bus hit the barriers and hangs from the overpass to the road below. There are nine injured civilians reported at this time,” wrote FDNY on Twitter.

“In responding to this incident, I started to discuss the information we were receiving, imagining a bus hanging on the edge. We had two scenes here where # Rescue3 started to protect the bus at the top while # Engine43 came around to start treating them. We are currently ensuring that all fuel and other hazardous materials inside the vehicle are protected until the bus can be placed on the road, “said FDNY Acting Battalion Chief Steven Moore in a statement Friday. Monday morning.

Officials said the bus fell about 15 meters on the access road.

FDNY Deputy Chief Paul Hopper, who oversaw emergency medical treatment and transportation at the scene, said: “We evaluated and treated a total of eight patients from this accident. The bus fell about 50 feet on the access road. Patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a height. “

All the injured were transported to a local hospital.

Officials said the MTA articulated bus operator may have experienced some kind of brake failure or did not turn correctly.

The bus passed over the grid to the ground below, where it had to be protected by the FDNY.

Photos shared on social media show that it is hanging on the overpass.

In an FDNY audio recording obtained by ABC News, a dispatcher said: “Continue the rescue. We have a double bus over the bridge, half of it is hanging on the bridge, there are people inside.”

The intersection is closed and the bus is waiting to be towed.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
