We have an official release date for the next ASUS gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 5. A lot of features and specs have leaked online, but now we can confirm that ASUS will bring back the 3.5mm audio jack in the next smartphone. This is noteworthy because its predecessor (the ROG Phone 3) abandoned the legacy port, which meant that users had to rely on a USB-C dongle (or the AeroActive Cooler accessory) to connect wired headsets.
One of DxOMark’s first audio reviews says that the ROG Phone 5 will come with a 3.5mm connector with an ESS DAC (digital to analog converter). The review also confirms that the smartphone will continue to include a dual front speaker configuration. The device was rated as one of the best when it comes to audio performance with ‘consistent results’ and ‘category leading’ sub-scores in playback and recording. According to the test results, the ROG Phone 5 offers better audio than the Mi 10 Pro and surpasses the previous champion, the ROG Phone 3.
ASUS will officially launch the ROG Phone 5 on March 10 at 7 pm Taiwan time. The smartphone should feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, up to 16 GB of RAM, a 6,000 mAh battery similar to its predecessor, a 6.78 inch OLED display and a three camera configuration on the rear. The smartphone should also replace the ROG logo with RGB backlighting with a dot matrix configuration, as seen in some of the leaked images and the official rendering of the press shared by DxOMark. There is also a small secondary display on the back that can be used to show things like game alerts and other notifications. In general, the design and appearance of the new device may be similar to the models of the previous generation, including a glass body with a standard screen without notches or perforated cutouts.
