Asian woman assaulted in Midtown on possible hate crime

An Asian woman was randomly attacked in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon in a possible hate crime attack, police and sources said.

The 41-year-old victim was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground while walking along West 31st Street near Sixth Avenue at around 1 pm, police said.

The suspect, a 37-year-old woman, shouted something in Spanish at the victim during the attack, according to police sources.

The victim signaled to the police and later helped locate the attacker near the crime intersection, the sources said.

Police said they arrested the suspect and are investigating the incident as a possible crime of bias. By the end of Sunday, no charges had been filed.

The Big Apple is experiencing a wave of attacks against people of Asian descent. Last year, there were 28 of these racially motivated attacks, compared to just two in 2019.
