Asian hate crimes in New York skyrocketed in March; murders increased by 36%, police say

Crime in New York increased in March compared to the same period last year, with murders by 36% and a surprising increase in hate crime attacks against Asian Americans, police said.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans soared last month, with 31 hate crimes recorded in March 2021, and none recorded in the same month in 2020, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said on Tuesday.

The Big Apple also saw a 36% increase in murders in March 2021, when 34 were reported compared to the 25 murders the previous year. The number of shootings has also increased, from 56 to 99, or nearly 77%, police said.

The total crime rate increased slightly in March 2021, with an increase of 2.4% year on year, according to NYPD statistics. However, the number of robberies and burglaries reported during the month has dropped compared to March 2020.

The police observed a general – though only 3% – reduction in hate crimes recorded by demographic groups during the month of March. But the NYPD also saw a 40% increase in hate crimes against individuals based on their sexual orientation, as well as hate crimes such as those that were classified as “ethnic” and “others”, the police said.

In one of the most notable incidents, a 65-year-old woman was the victim of an unprovoked attack on March 29, while walking to the church in Manhattan.

Her assailant, later identified as 38-year-old Brandon Elliot, repeatedly kicked and punched the woman and said to her, “F — you don’t believe here, you Asian …” according to documents and law enforcement officials. Elliot was detained without bail during his second-degree assault charge as a hate crime and a first-degree assault attempt as a hate crime.

Records show that Elliot, who was on probation for murdering his mother, is currently being held on Rikers Island.
