Asian elderly woman stabbed in California while walking dogs

An elderly Asian woman was stabbed to death on Saturday in Riverside, California, while walking her dogs, according to authorities.

CNN reports that the Riverside police received several calls about Ke Chieh Meng, 64, who suffered from knife wounds on Golden Avenue in the La Sierra neighborhood after being attacked while walking his two puppies in the morning.

She was taken to the hospital and then died.

Shortly after the attack, authorities received reports from neighbors in the area of ”a transient woman walking in her backyards and looking suspicious,” according to CNN.

The woman, 23-year-old Los Angeles-based Darlene Stephanie Montoya, was later safely detained, Riverside police said.

“When our detectives interviewed the suspect, they found nothing to suggest that she attacked the victim because of her race,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback said, according to CNN.

Montoya is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, violation of weapons and being under the influence of an illegal substance. She was previously arrested by Riverside police on March 30 after attacking a woman with a skateboard near a shopping mall, according to authorities.

This incident occurred less than a month after a deadly shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, six of whom were Asian women. The attack sparked a conversation across the country about the recent rise in anti-Asian violence.
