There is a reason why very few good attackers in the line become free agents.
When teams find a goalkeeper, they keep him.
Three teams have already taken steps to arrest attackers on the offensive line with a free agent with the franchise brand. And the 49ers certainly would have done the same with Trent Williams, except that he had written in his contract, he could not be tagged.
Smart move.
Williams stated in January that he wanted to return to the 49ers. But he also expressed intrigue about learning its value in the open market – a rarity for a first-rate offensive tackle.
“San Francisco would be the main candidate anyway,” said Williams. “So even if I get to the free agency, it won’t be because I’m trying to go somewhere else. It may be simply because I want to see my worth.
“It’s been 11 years in this league, and I have yet to see a franchise left go to the open market. I think it would be interesting to see what (my) value is. “
Williams was expected to be an attractive free agent because it was not expected that there would be many comparable players available in his position.
Now, there is even less.
The Carolina Panthers used their franchise brand in the Taylor Moton offensive attack. The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to arrest Cam Robinson, the NFL Network reported Tuesday morning.
In addition, Washington put the label on guard Brandon Scherff, reports JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
The one-year mark for line attackers is expected to be approximately $ 14 million. As Scherff is being marked for the second year in a row, its price will be around $ 18 million.
Williams is likely aiming for a multi-year contract at around $ 20 million a season.
Williams is clearly the best striker available at the free agency. Pittsburgh left striker Alejandro Villanueva, 32, is probably the second opponent on the market after completing a $ 24 million four-year deal he signed in 2017.

The 49ers acquired Williams on a Washington draft day exchange to replace Joe Staley. After missing out on the 2019 season, Williams returned to action with the 49ers and was undoubtedly the best offensive tackle in the game.
His mix of size, strength, agility and technique makes Williams a perfect fit for the demands of Kyle Shanahan’s attack as a pass protector and running blocker.
He was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the eighth time in his 10 NFL seasons. He turns 33 in July.
