Army chaplain under investigation for calling transgender soldiers ‘mentally incapable’ to serve

Authorities are investigating a Texas Army chaplain after he suggested in a social media post that transgender soldiers were “mentally incapable” and “not qualified to serve”.

Major Andrew Calvert made the comments on a military newspaper’s Facebook page on Monday, the same day that President Joe Biden signed an executive order lifting the ban on transsexuals serving openly in the military, according to officials. He is chaplain to the 3rd Security Force Assistance Brigade in Fort Hood.

“How is not rejecting reality (biology) evidence that a person is mentally incapable (sick), rendering that person unqualified to serve? There is little difference in this than in those who believe and defend a ‘flat land’, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, ”Calvert wrote in a post on the Army Times Facebook page, according to the images.

“The motivation is different, but the argument is the same. This person is a MedBoard for Mental Wellness waiting to happen. What a waste of military resources and funding! “

The Army Security Force Assistance Command reminded its soldiers of its “Think, Type, Post” social media policy in a online statement on Tuesday.

“We are aware of the recent comments posted on the Army Times Facebook on the ban on being removed from transgender members of the service. This incident is under investigation,” officials said in the statement.

Biden’s order on Monday reversed a ban that former President Donald Trump put in place. The new guideline “immediately prohibits involuntary separations, layoffs and denials of reinstatement or continuation of service” based on gender identity, according to the White House.

The order also targeted immediate “correction” of military records to those affected by Trump’s ban.
