Five days ago, it looked like the Republic of Ireland was going to fly through Arizona, just like everywhere else in the world.

The COVID-19 UK variant, dubbed B117, which studies show is more contagious than the variants currently found in the United States, constitutes 45% of new COVID-19 infections in Ireland. Fourteen days ago, the country posted an average number of new confirmed seven-day cases of 27.4. It shot up to 132.7 5 days ago, before it started to decline.

Arizona is no stranger to being at the top of the COVID-19 charts. The state has been the main hotspot in the world at least three times now.

The first occurrence occurred in early July, when the country’s sparkling states experienced a sudden increase in late spring. The state returned to the first place – on January 4 and stayed there until January 10, when Ireland became the main hotspot in the world. However, the change was short-lived, as Arizona recorded a world record of 134.7 new confirmed cases on average per 100,000 people.

Leading the world in new COVID-19 deaths per capita

The recently confirmed cases are not the only metric by which Arizona leads the world. According to the same data set, Arizona is also leading the world in new deaths from COVID-19 per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
