Last week, Ariel Pink and John Maus were in Washington, DC to attend the Donald Trump rally – the one where Trump encouraged his supporters to invade the Capitol. When the public found out about Pink’s presence in Washington, Pink insisted he wasn’t part of the riot. He also said a lot about his support for Trump, claiming that the election was “stolen” and that “the reason the left / mainstream media has made it virtually a crime to support him is due to his unprecedented success as U.S. president. ”Shortly afterwards, Pink Summer’s Mexican Summer, dismissed him.
Yesterday, news broke that Pink’s ex-girlfriend accused him of physical and sexual abuse as part of a lawsuit in Los Angeles. Pink had sought a restraining order against her, apparently in an effort to stop her from making her public claims against him. A judge ruled against Pink in that case the same day that Pink was in Washington for the rally.
Last night, Pink sat down with Tucker Carlson on Carlson’s evening show on Fox News. Carlson tried to defend Pink as someone who had been victimized by the “culture of cancellation”, and Pink was happy to play the victim. Carlson set Pink up saying that Pink is an artist and that artists do transgressive things: “You did the most transgressive thing. You have become a public supporter of Trump. ”
Pink, stuttering and visibly close to tears, said the media tried to portray him as one of the protesters on the Capitol: “I was there for a peaceful rally. That was all it was for me. But there is no fact check or anything like that. 130 articles were published within 24 hours. (I haven’t seen a single media outlet claim that Pink was one of the Trump supporters who broke into the Capitol.)
Pink also told the story of Mexican Summer leaving him. He stated that the record company first assured them that they would support him, but that they changed their minds: “They succumbed to canceling the culture” He told a great sad story about where it leaves him: “It leaves me practically in poverty and on the street. I do not know. I’m a little overwhelmed now, and I don’t know exactly what to do … I can’t even pay my lawyer right now. ”He complained about Biden’s supporters as“ fierce winners ”, and Carlson took advantage of the phrase.
Pink made no mention of because he might need that lawyer, and neither could Carlson. Carlson stayed away from the physical and sexual abuse charges against Pink. Pink said something vague about how he had been “me too”, but did not elaborate. He, however, said: “I know I didn’t do anything wrong, so there’s no reason for me to feel remorse for it.” (By “that”, he presumably meant his support for Trump.)
Pink’s performance on Tucker Carlson’s show may be the most pathetic and arrogant thing I’ve ever seen. Pink, for example, tried to say that she knew that Trump had “lost a lot”, but she couldn’t resist comparing herself to Trump: “People seem to want to kick me down, too, in the same way that they have Trump – kick us down when we’re down. “
Pink also said, “There are new articles being written. Just, just … people are so mean. ”In addition, Carlson ended by saying,” When reasonable people like you are destroyed, we should all be made aware. ” It seemed like a moment of matrix failure: Ariel Pink complaining about people being mean to Tucker Carlson, Tucker Carlson calling Ariel Pink “reasonable”.
