Apple’s virtual reality headset is supposed to be ultra expensive and very niche

Apple is working hard on its first virtual reality headset, but according to reports, this initial product offering will be intentionally sophisticated and niche to pave the way for a more consumer-friendly AR headset in the future. In a Bloomberg report, sources close to the subject say that Apple’s first VR headset – intended for activities such as games, videos and communication – will be available as early as 2022. And it won’t be cheap.

This first virtual reality headset is likely to be more expensive than rival virtual reality headsets and can only sell “one headset per day per store”. This strategy is apparently intentional, as Apple continues to work on a consumer-oriented AR eyewear product. As for the VR headset itself, this product was supposedly configured to include Apple’s most advanced chip and will feature a higher resolution than Oculus or HTC headphones. The power of this headset also requires a built-in fan, a design choice that Apple usually tries to avoid.

According to sources, versions of Apple’s virtual reality headset with its processor and fan have led to a very heavy and large device, raising concerns about “neck strain”. Current designs have decreased in size and use a fabric exterior to reduce overall weight. It will also be a standalone device like the Oculus Quest.

Apple has optimized its headset to be much closer to the face, which reduces the size of the device, but removes the space required for users who wear glasses with virtual reality headsets. One solution that Apple is working on is developing a system where owners can insert personalized prescription lenses into virtual reality headsets.

However, prescription lenses will open Apple to additional government regulations.

The VR headset will have many of the same features as the competitor’s hardware, but also some AR features. The development of AR glasses is in the beginning, but it is supposedly the main objective of Apple, since the company sees AR as a more conventional product compared to VR.

However, launching a VR headset sooner will prepare customers for what to expect when Apple eventually launches an AR headset, with an announcement supposedly planned for 2023.
