Apple was ordered to pay $ 308.5 million to Personalized Media Communications after infringing a patent related to digital rights management (DRM), reported Bloomberg. A federal jury in Marshall, Texas, ruled on Friday that the company had infringed the PMC patent after a five-day trial.
Personalized Media has filed a lawsuit alleging that Apple has infringed its patent on technology, including FairPlay, which is used to distribute encrypted content from its iTunes, App Store and Apple Music applications.
It all started in 2015. PMC sued Apple for allegedly infringing seven of its patents. The Apple company successfully challenged the Custom Media Communications case at the United States Patent Office, but PMC appealed to the court last year and reversed the council’s decision that certain patent claims were invalid.
For Bloomberg, Apple said it was “disappointed in the decision and would appeal.” Google and YouTube recently won a patent trial by PMC and the case against Netflix is pending in New York.
PMC is a non-practicing entity, which means that the company only registers patents, but does not use them. Personalized Media Communications owns dozens of patents and generates revenue through patent litigation.
This is not the first and it certainly will not be the last case that Apple will face. On Friday, the founder of Epic Games attacked the company for promoting PUBG Mobile on the App Store. The trial is scheduled for May.
