Apple says some iPhone 12 hardware issues will no longer require replacing the entire device

Apple today informed Apple Authorized Service Providers that it will introduce a new method of repair on the same unit for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 models exhibiting certain problems that normally require replacement of the entire unit.

In an internal memo, obtained by MacRumors, Apple said that technicians will be able to offer repairs on the same unit from February 23 for models of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 that cannot be connected or are having problems with the logic board , Face ID system or device box, such as cracked rear window.

Apple Authorized Service Providers (and probably Genius Bars) will have a new “iPhone Rear System” part available to them, which consists of the rear shell of an iPhone with all components except the screen and the rear camera, including the battery, logic board, wireless charge coil, Taptic Engine, facial identification system and so on.

If a customer has an iPhone 12 mini with cracked rear glass, for example, technicians can replace the entire rear of the device, with the new case affixed to the original display and the rear camera. For this reason, the customer’s monitor and rear camera must be free from damage or functional failure in order for your device to qualify for the repair method on the same unit, according to Apple.

The new repair method will be available in all countries and regions where the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are sold, according to Apple. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models do not appear to be eligible at this time.

In its memo, Apple said the move supports the company’s continued commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of all products it sells.
