Apple said it was working on a low-cost external monitor to succeed with the Thunderbolt Display

Apple started developing a low-cost external monitor that would be sold alongside its cutting-edge Pro Display XDR, according to Bloombergis Mark Gurman. The display would be a consumer-oriented successor to Apple’s previous Thunderbolt Display, launched in 2011 for $ 999 and discontinued in 2016.

The report states that Apple’s new low-priced display will feature reduced brightness and contrast ratio compared to the Pro Display XDR, which costs $ 4,999 before including an optional $ 999 support:

As part of its renewed efforts with the Mac desktop, Apple began the initial development of a low-cost external monitor to sell alongside the Pro Display XDR. Apple’s current monitor was launched in 2019 and costs $ 5,000 – before reaching the $ 1,000 booth.

The cheapest monitor would present a screen geared more towards the consumer than for professional use and would not have the brightness and contrast ratio of the first line offer. Apple last launched a consumer monitor called the Thunderbolt Display in 2011 for $ 999, but discontinued it in 2016.

There is no word on the size, resolution or other specifications of Apple’s low-priced display yet, but the Pro Display XDR is equipped with a 32-inch 6K screen, while the Thunderbolt Display had a 27-inch panel with QHD resolution 2560 x 1440. The screen would probably have much thinner front bezels than the Thunderbolt screen.
